Brenia’s past

Posted by Alonso Martin

Hey everybody!

Today we have a little bit of backstory prepared for you, courtesy of the villagers of Alicia’s hometown: Brenia.

Brenia is home to a small, tightly knit community of wizards who are the last surviving bloodline of a more prosperous time. Brenia was founded by the great wizards of the previous era, and it flourished for many centuries until the day when the power inside the mountain was unleashed by Elthëlian, the God-Spirit of the Light. The afternoon sky turned to a bright purple, and fire and brimstone rained from above. Although the destruction wasn’t great, it left behind something that all but ensured Brenia’s demise: the Curse.

Since that day, children became increasingly rare in Brenia, and with each generation, more and more women were unable to bear children. Alicia and Hostra are the only two wizards to be born in decades, and the only hope for Brenia’s dwindling future.

Alonso’s been busy the last couple days working on bringing Brenia and Auster Island to life for an animated introductory sequence (shown above), and it’s been coming along spectacularly. We’re not quite ready to show the full piece off yet, but we’re looking forward to unveiling it all soon! Until then, enjoy this WIP teaser (and have a good weekend!).

can’t wait!
I’d like to point out that it doesn’t sound right, when you call Alicia a wizard? I know it’s not definitive that a wizard must be a man. But with media these days (harry potter etc.) when the term wizard is used, people think of a male magician. Witch or magician would be a much better term for her.

Ah, yeah, I see where you’re coming from. I didn’t want for there to be a gender distinction when it came to the noun ‘wizard’, especially because Alicia is a character with both masculine and feminine traits.

Wizard comes from M.E. ‘wys’ (wise) and the intensifier ‘-ard’. Words like ‘bastard’, ‘coward’, ‘drunkard’ have the same intensifier, and all of them are indeterminately used for the male or female gender. Just for curiosity’s sake, the Spanish cognate for bastard, ‘bastardo’, has the -o or -a particle to define gender, and while English and French do not, the word for coward, ‘cobarde’, forces the indeterminate gender -e. So, technically, ‘wizard’ is of indeterminate gender, though it has come to infer the male gender thanks to the modern works you mention. Unfortunate, I think, since ‘wizard’ is a much kinder word than ‘witch’, which has a history of negative connotations.

What if you called her a Mage instead of a Wizard? That normally has more of a female trait attached to it. Just a suggestion to consider, it may be too late to make changes like that though…

Ah, yes, it is a tad late for that, I’m afraid!

I didn’t know about Heart Forth until I saw your job posting on Pixeljoint. HFA is turning into a truly fine game, and I’d like to offer my services and become a part of it.

I’m putting together a little demonstration of my skills, using some of the game art you’ve posted. You can expect an e-mail from me in a couple of days.

Keep up the fantastic work!

Well done, man! I’ve been waiting for your project to get the attention it deserves. Can’t even remember how long it’s been, but with each update your game keeps looking better and better. Congratulations on the funding, and here’s hoping things keep going well :)

Use jQuery Loader for High Quality images, and animated PNGs for high quality animations. Gifs look horrendous on such a nice website.

Emoticons! Yes! Also, that’s a pretty solid backstory: Mysterious curse, mysterious world below, mysterious evil spirit… So many things to find out!
